In a world where people are not open about grief and fear talking about their emotions, Margaux Corda decided to break the rules. “Fantasma Inheritance” is the photographic representation of the physical and emotional heritage passed on to her by her departed mother.

Sometimes words just aren’t enough to genuinely explain the extent of pain or absolutely describe the remembrance of a loved one. Many are the ones who aren’t even able to talk about it. But Margaux Corda found a way to express her grief and emotions without having to choose the right words for it.

Language is limited when it comes to expressing the sophistication of grief.

Through this series of photographs, Margaux recreates memories of her mother who passed away in 2016. By photographing her jewellery and using light to demonstrate the depth of their relationship, she conveys the family’s physical and genetic legacy and relives some of the memories created through the assets inherited.

Using this play of light and reflection in my photos, I feel they represent the metaphor of memory and death. The light that weakens and gradually fades away into a memory.

On the other hand, the photographer’s work portrays a deeper collective memory of her roots as she superimposes images of herself with the ones from her mother. Copying poses and light settings, Corda creates a morphing of the two of them and finds a way to travel from the present to the past.
