Here’s the list of the winners of Cherrydeck’s Editors’ Choice Award in May 2018. For this month, we asked photographers in our community to submit their profiles and share with us their works surrounding the theme “Urban Life” — how cities shape human life and vice versa or what impacts our civilization has on cities, may it be positive or negative. The list below is the top 20 profiles (not ranked in any order) among the large pool of diverse submissions. They were carefully chosen by Cherrydeck editors and our guest curator Constanze Spross , a seasoned art buyer of Thjnk, a top-notch agency in Germany. May 2018 Editors’ Choice:
Alnis Stakle is a Latvian photographer and the professor of photography at the Rigas Stradins University (LV). He holds a Ph.D. in art education from Daugavpils University (LV). Since 1998, his works have been exhibited widely, including Latvian National Museum of Art, Modern Art Oxford (GB), Art Center ‘Winzavod’ in Moscow (RU), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires (AR), Centre for Fine Arts BOZAR in Brussels (BE), in addition to being held in private and public collections. His works have been published in British Journal of Photography, Wired, Camera Austria, EYEMAZING, IMAGO, OjodePez, Archivo, Leica Fotografie International, etc.
Ryan is a photographer, driven by the interdisciplinary practices of geography, art history, and psychology. He was born in Amsterdam and raised on Vancouver Island, Canada. Ryan completed his undergraduate education at UBC in Vancouver, and in 2012 received a Masters of Fine Art Photography & Video at The School of Visual Arts in New York City. He is primarily interested in photographing the points of intersection where the natural and manmade converge.
Mariana is a Brazillian photographer based in Aarhus, Denmark. Most of her assignments are related to cultural causes: art exhibitions, plays, concerts and literary events. She has also been working as a volunteer photographer for Litterær Lounge since 2014. She has several ongoing photo series in which she captures foggy landscapes, urban scenes at night and environmental pictures whenever the weather is on “her side”.
Cody has been taking photographs since the age of 15. He loves to shoot lifestyle portraits and documentary travel photography. He currently lives in Toronto with his girlfriend and his dog.
Leila is a commercial and street photographer based in Bamberg, Germany. She was selected as a finalist for HIPA awards 2017 in the category “The Moment” and nominated for the Fine Art Photography Awards 2018 in the category Architecture Portfolio on PhotoVogue Italia.
Micheal is an architect by training and photographer by heart. He is a visual storyteller, weaving narratives through people’s movements and emotions. Michele lives and operates in New York City.
Tammie is a third generation photographer, born and raised on the central east coast of Australia. Taking a simple, minimalist approach to her work, she prides herself on creating idyllic, storytelling lifestyle images that evoke a sense of space and calm.
Diego was born and raised in the province of Palermo, where he currently lives. He is a photojournalist with interests in social reportage, stories of marginality, discrimination, of action but also success stories in contexts where the failure is the practice. Diego is also a travel and photography blogger.
Joseph studied French and Italian at the University of Cambridge and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. He then horrified his parents by deciding to be a photographer. The best summary of what he does is ‘storytelling with a side order of off-beat creativity’. So far he’s produced still and moving images on location, in studios, from helicopters, boats, and cranes, underwater and up mountains.
Guillaume is a commercial and editorial photographer based in New York City. After a career in public relations in Paris, he moved to New York in 2006. On arrival, he fell in love with this bustling city. As someone who has always been fascinated by photography, the urban landscape and the melting pot atmosphere of the Big Apple became an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him. He tries to capture a small part of the city’s soul and energy.
Ben is a people and documentary photographer. He is currently based in Hamburg, Germany. He is in search of stories that feed his creativity. He wants to use the power of images he creates to show the beauty and diversity of our planet. He is working hard to be an interdisciplinary photographer.
Roman is a photographer based in Hamburg, Germany. He focuses on documentary photography and portrait photography. Monochrome film photography in 35mm, medium format or large format is still his main process. He shoots digital as well. He believes the camera is the key to other people’s hearts, but the print in their hands keeps this door open forever.
Michael is a freelance photographer from Seattle, Washington, living and working in Brooklyn, New York. His photographs are defined by graphic compositions, natural daylight, and a strong use of color, with a body of work that includes a strong focus on travel, people, interiors culture and food. His work has been published in Conde Nast Traveler, Bon Appetit, Lonely Planet, El Pais magazine, Wine Spectator, Sweet Paul, Vanity Fair and l’officiel voyage among others.
Michel Mees is a commercial photographer specialising in music and portrait photography. He shoots editorial, advertising, and corporate assignments. He is based in The Hague, Netherlands. The images below are from his work series called “Simulation”, a body of work based on simulated reality hypothesis.
Howard Kingsnorth is an advertising photographer with a distinctive style. Having worked in most genres of advertising photography, Howard has more recently applied his ‘epic’ vision to aerial photography creating dynamic images of cityscapes, urban landscapes, and architectural structures. His work has become widely sought after by global creative agencies, and architectural clients.
Christiane was born in Munich, but currently works and lives with her family in Lausanne, Switzerland. After working over 15 years as creative director and photo editor for various magazines and projects, she started to work professional photographer for private, industrial and public clients.
Marianna Cardenio is a photographic artist who specializes in evocative images of the living world. Currently based in London and Madrid, Marianna took on photography in 2010 and since then she has been working in the variety of genres which have all influenced her development, interests and aesthetic style.
Uta works as a professional photographer since 2007. While studying photography in the US, she developed the passion for storytelling with the focus on travel, food, and interior design. She is based in Hamburg, Germany and loves to see places and people all over the world and photographs their stories.
Lise a fine art photographer currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her main focus is perception and identity. She aims to leave the spectator in the space between familiarity and strangeness and question the relationship between the human being and the world we perceive as real. In April 2017 she was awarded the winner for the Sony World Photography Awards (The National Award of Denmark/Iceland and the Enhanced Category). She was also recently shortlisted for in the Felix Schoeller Photo Award, category Free Choice/Conceptual.
Natalie is the founder and lead photographer at Jennings Photo, a personal & business branding studio based in Los Angeles & Minneapolis. Her style focuses on movement and portraiture, adding a creative look to traditional headshot collections. And though it’s over-used, it’s safe to say Natalie is a storyteller, too. In addition to branding, Jennings Photo offers lifestyle & photo business coaching sessions.
Rick is a writer and photojournalist living in Toronto. He specializes in editorial portraiture, news, lifestyle and still-life photography for a variety of clients in North America and Europe, including NOW magazine, the Globe & Mail, the Toronto Star, the National Post, EAR, Financial Times of Canada, Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times, the Village Voice, SPIN, Esquire, the New Yorker and others.
Felix is a freelance photographer based in the UK. His work focuses on the design, architecture, and lifestyles found in the built environment.
