Here you go: a list of banned hashtags OR hashtags that will not do you any good if you post them. Not only that they don’t work properly, they will also disable all of your other hashtags – including the legit ones, in the same post. This could result in a serious consequence, like your account getting “shadow banned”. So if you are going use a hashtag, take a look at the list below and/or save it in your notes as a reminder. Please note that this is only a list for the English language, and it’s impossible to make a complete list, as there are hundreds of thousands of hashtags currently being banned by Instagram. We will also later tell you later how to check for banned hashtags that are not on this list below.

The first group of hastags are the seeminly harmless ones, meaning they are not considered offensive or THAT offensive by themselves. Why are they banned though you might ask? What makes a word like “Asia” get banned (how else do we call this geographical location)? And why does Instagram think “Kansas” is bad? Nobody knows for sure, but many theories say it’s because these hashtags are too popular or frequently generated by bots. Some hashtags, on the other hand, (further down the list) are banned for obvious reasons. They often lead to sexual, violent or harassing content. So here you go.

Next is a list of completely banned hashtags you should never use. Again, while some of these words are not always offensive (like #lean, for example), they are banned because they have been inappropriately used in sexual or violent context. We want to explicitly state that we do not promote this kind of content!

Bear in mind that the list of banned hashtags is constantly being updated by Instagram. A good hashtag today can be a bad one tomorrow. The best strategy to make sure you don’t accidentally use any of them is to be judicious about hashtag use. Do research on every single hashtag you are thinking of posting beforehand. The easiest way is to type a hashtag directly into the Instagram search field. If a hashtag is banned, most of the content being tagged will not be shown, and for most cases, Instagram will just tell you directly if a ban is being placed (see the picture below).

That’s it for now. Happy hashtagging responsibly!
